Questions about upgrading to the service and resetting the service
How do I upgrade to the service?
All the setting options are described in the user guide.
| |
How long does the conversion take? Will e-mail delivery be interrupted?
This depends on the TTL value of your MX records in the DNS. You should set these to a value of
5 minutes or less before the conversion. The conversion will then take place very quickly. No e-mails
will be lost.
| |
How quickly can I reset the service?
This is also possible in just a few minutes, provided the relevant TTLs in the MX records are low
enough.
| |
Do I have to register all domains on the IP-Plus name server?
This isn't absolutely necessary. However, we do recommend that you operate at least one secondary
DNS for IP-Plus.
| |
What do I have to do if the domains are registered on a different name server?
In this case, you will have to make the appropriate change to the MX records yourself. Firstly,
you should activate the Virus & Spam Filter, then change the MX record.
| |
How does the MX/FW functionality work? What configuration options are there?
The MX record points to the Virus & Spam Filter server, where a forwarder is set up in the
administration interface. This forwarder points to the actual mail server. However, this is not entered
as an MX record for the mail domain. If several servers are to be used internally, separate MX records
can be set up for each subdomain, e.g. incoming.customer.ch.

General questions about e-mail traffic
Is the size of e-mails limited by the Virus und Spam Filter?
There is currently a limit of 32MB per e-mail for the receipt of mail. We reserve the right to
make future changes to this limit.
| |
If my mail server is down, will Swisscom temporarily store my e-mails? How long will they be
kept for?
If your mail server cannot be accessed, we will hold your e-mails temporarily on our system for
up to 5 days, and deliver them to your mail server when this becomes available once more.
| |
What is the availability of the Virus und Spam Filter, and how reliable/redundant is the server infrastructure?
IP-Plus does not guarantee any particular availability for the service, but we make every effort to
achieve an availability of 99.9%. The infrastructure has a very high level of redundancy, so the
failure of a single server does not affect the service.
| |
What happens if the Virus und Spam Filter goes down (will mail be lost)?
If our mail server cannot be accessed, mail servers that have been correctly configured will store
mails in their mail queue and attempt to deliver them at a later time. This means you won't lose any
mail in this situation either.
| |
What happens to encrypted e-mails?
Encrypted e-mails cannot be checked for viruses or spam, because we cannot decrypt them.
| |
Are there any statistics available on the Virus & Spam Filter?
You can find statistics for your Virus & Spam Filter service in the administration interface under
my.ip-plus.net.
Questions about the spam filter
What settings exist for e-mails identified as spam?
E-mails identified as spam are flagged with ***SPAM*** in the e-mail subject line. However, it is
also possible to forward all identified spam to a defined e-mail address.
| |
Is it possible to set up a spam trash box?
This can be defined in the administration interface. For more details, please refer to the user
guide.
| |
How sensitive are the spam filter settings?
You can set the Virus & Spam Filter very precisely. However, we would usually recommend that you
use the default values, because minimal changes to the spam filter threshold value usually only result
in very slight changes to the behaviour of the spam filter.
| |
How does the spam filter work?
The spam filter consists of a complex rules-based filter. This checks keywords and analyzes syntax
in order to identify the particular mail syntax of known spam tools. The filter also contains a
self-learning component which enables the filter to be continuously modified.
| |
Can senders be put on a black list or white list?
Yes, this is possible. You can put individual e-mail addresses or entire domains on a single
black list or white list.
Questions about the virus filter and attachments
What type of attachments are filtered out (.exe, .vbs etc.)?
We try to filter out unusual attachments. These primarily include double data extensions such
as .pif.exe, which are very often used by virus programmers in order to conceal the file type. Other
rather unusual attachments are also blocked, such as .vbs and .bat.
| |
How can inadmissible attachments (e.g. .exe) be allowed through the filter nevertheless?
You can transmit these e-mails in encrypted form. They will then pass through our filter without
being scanned.
| |
What happens to the mail content in such cases? Is it forwarded to the user?
No, blocked e-mails are not delivered.
| |
Can virus messages be switched off?
No, this is not possible.
| |
Does the white list have any effect on the virus filter?
Even e-mails whose senders are on the white list go through the virus filter, so that any viruses
they contain can be identified.
| |
How often is the virus filter updated?
It looks for updates every hour. However, updates are not usually available as frequently as this.
Virus scanner manufacturers usually supply updates just once a day.
| |
Do I need to have additional virus software locally or on my desktops?
Since viruses can spread not only via e-mails, but can also reach your corporate network in many
other ways (e.g. via the Web, CD-ROMs and USB sticks), we would most strongly advise you to install a
local virus scanner on each PC, in addition to the Virus & Spam Filter service.
Questions about address entry
Do all domains have to be entered?
All mail domains that are to receive mail via the Virus & Spam Filter must be entered.
| |
Do I have to enter all my mail addresses as well as my domains? If so, why?
Yes, any mail addresses that are not registered with us will not be able to receive e-mails from
the Internet. This is so that we can ensure that spam attacks involving automatically generated mail
addresses are intercepted before they reach your server, thus relieving your system of this spam mail.
| |
Is there a more efficient method than manual entry?
The input window for entering new mail addresses lets you enter more than one e-mail address. For
example, you can use copy/paste to insert a list of all your mail addresses. Any existing e-mail
addresses do not need to be created again after this. If you use a very large number of mail boxes
(around 500 or more) and you often make changes to them, we give you a tool with which you can load a
list of all your mail addresses onto our server. But this only really makes sense if you have a lot of
changes. For the initial setup, we would also recommend the Web interface if you have a very large
number of e-mail addresses.
